Darren Rowse…power blogger, author, and next week’s “Meet the Affiliates” Interview just posted an interview with ME on his blog that I believe is worth sharing with you.

Here is a link to the interview - this is probably the most in-depth and candid interview I’ve ever given online and I’m honored that Darren decided to interview me about Pepperjam Network and share it with the 50,000+ readers of his very popular blog.

BTW - in the interview I share the formula I used when I started in affiliate marketing some 9 years ago to become a leading super affiliate at the time.  Hope you enjoy. :)

Meet the Affiliates: Interview #8

John CHow
John Chow
JohnChow.com / The Tech Zone / TTZ Media

Question #1

KRIS: Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?

JOHN: I live in Vancouver, BC Canada. I’m married and have two daughters but no pets. However, my wife would like to get a dog.

Question #2

KRIS: Can you take us through a typical “day-in-the-life” of John Chow?

JOHN: I generally get up at around 8AM. The first thing I do when I get into the office is check the email and delete the spam. Then I will check the comments on my blog and approve or reject any that were held for moderation. I also check stats and approve or reject any new TTZ Media applications at this time. The entire process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Then I eat some breakfast.

The rest of the day is divided between playing with my daughter, making a blog post, working out, chatting on IM or Twitter, hanging out with friends, etc. I don’t have any structured hours of work.

Question #3

KRIS: We all know “John Chow” from the incredibly popular, entertaining and successful blog www.johnchow.com.  Why has your blog been so successful?  Are there any specific things you’ve done to get so many readers (as I write - 26,044 readers)? Can you share a few tips for our readers?

JOHN: I think the biggest thing for the success of the blog has been its transparency. I don’t have anything to hide. What you read on the blog is pretty much how I am in real life. On the Internet, everyone can be whoever they want to be. However, it’s generally the ones that are themselves that will do well.

Question #4

KRIS: One of the things that you started doing quite some time ago was sharing with the readers of JohnChow.com how much money you make through your blog.  Why did / do you do this? Has disclosing your income increased or decreased the amount of money you make on your blog?

JOHN: The income disclosure was part of a case study to see if money can be made by blogging. Up until September 2006, the blog didn’t make any money. However, one of the topics I write about is making money by blogging, so I got many emails asking me to prove it. So I did.

Question #5

KRIS: If you were not an affiliate marketer and blogger what do you think you’d be doing?

JOHN: I would be an accountant. It’s what I studied in school.

Question #6

KRIS: If you could trade shoes with anyone in the world for “one long weekend” (the one day thing is too short) who would it be and why?

JOHN: I would have to say the President of the United State. Then I would get the experience what real stress is like. I think one day maybe enough.

Question #7

KRIS: One of your successful money making ventures is TTZ Media Network.  Can you please tell us about TTZ Media Network…

JOHN: TTZ Media is an ad network that provides shopping related ads to its affiliated sites. The ads feature consumer products with real time pricing and direct links to the merchant that is selling them. The system works best for technology and shopping based sites. Learn more about TTZ Media HERE.

Question #8

KRIS: Another one of your popular projects is The Tech Zone.  Can you tell us more about that?

JOHN: The TechZone is my first money making site. Like my blog, it was started as a hobby. I’ve always been into computers and The TechZone started as a page about my first computer. The site has expanded a lot since then. Today, the site reviews the latest tech gadgets and reports back from all the major technology trade shows like CES and Computex. Learn more about The Tech Zone HERE.

Question #9

KRIS: When you are not busy being a Technorati Top 100 blogger and super affiliate what do you like to do?  Any hobbies you’d like to share with our readers?

JOHN: I like to hang out with friends and family. I also enjoy attending local technology and blogging meet ups to meet like minded people. I don’t have any hobbies unless you call blogging a hobby.

Question #10

KRIS: How can internet marketing beginners avoid failure and become successful internet marketers like you? Can you share a few tips?

JOHN: Read the blogs of successful Internet marketers and learn as much from them as possible. Attend some of the trade show to meet them in person. Getting educated in the business will save you from a lot of mistakes.

eBay Affiliate Program on Pepperjam Network

Cool News from the Pepperjam Tech Team (thanks Runman!):

Deep Linking has been enabled for eBay affiliates on Pepperjam Network.

Now you can create text links and banners to any page you want on eBay.

Our tool is pretty easy to use since it is already built into the PJN interface (no need for eBay’s Link Generator).

Here’s how to use it. (note that the same deep linking steps apply to creating text links, banners, and advanced links)

Log in to Pepperjam Network - www.pepperjamnetwork.com

(1) Select Generate Links: Program List
(2) Select eBay from the advertiser drop down list
(3) Under Additional Options you’ll see “Override Destination URL”

Input the exact page on eBay that you’d like to link to into the “Override Destination URL” section. The page you select can be anything, including a product page, keyword search, category search or whatever. Note that you can also add a unique SID (recommended) at this step as well.

(4) Click Update.
(5) Pull your tracking code, banner code, or tracking URL from the list below.

Any questions?

Do not hesitate to ask.

Next on deck: (1) Advanced links. (2) BANS or similar niche store builder solution.

If you haven’t applied to the eBay program on Pepperjam Network you can do so at www.pepperjamnetwork.com

Meet the Affiliates

Welcome to Week #4 of the Pepperjam Network “Meet the Affiliates” Interview Series!

This week I interview Colin McDougall.  Colin is one of the most passionate, motivated, and talented affiliate marketers in the industry.  If you have ever had the opportunity to meet Colin you will remember him - not only because he is a pretty large guy, but because his enthusiasm for affiliate marketing and more importantly - life - is infectious!

I am confident that you will find Colin to be a remarkable affiliate marketer, person, and businessman…just like we do here at Pepperjam!

Here are the rules…

Meet the Affiliates: Interview #4

Colin McDougall
Colin McDougall
ConstantConversation.com/

Question #1

KRIS: When did you first get involved in affiliate marketing? Tell us the story of how you got started…

COLIN: I first got started when my hockey buddy, Chuck Anderson who was partnered with James Martell, asked me to work for them to create a content management system. In exchange for coding for free they taught my some aspects of making money online.

That was in 2001 and within about 6 months of starting my affiliate income had exceeded my techie job income by 3 fold. I knew the “real job” wouldn’t around much longer!

Question #2

KRIS: Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?

COLIN: I am married to my lovely wife Wendy and live in the Vancouver suburb of Langley with my 2 daughters (ages 5 & 7) and our cat Stanley named after the holy grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup.

Question #3

KRIS: When and how did you get started in the affiliate marketing industry?  Tell us the story…

COLIN: Before I talk about getting started, I would like to share my past career path with you.

I graduated from BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) in 1993 from their Electronics Engineering specializing in Telecommunications.

Thanks to nepotism (my father was in senior management) I got my first “real job” as a UNIX and Database systems analyst. After working like a slave (18 hour days) at a thankless job that required me to drop what I was doing on a moments notice to respond to systems calls at all hours of the night I had enough and applied at the power company here in British Columbia (BC Hydro).

At the time I thought it was fantastic working at the new job because I received a whopping $10,000 / year increase in salary. With the increased salary I thought I could afford to finally purchase a house, so I did.

At the same time, my first daughter was born and I had not fully realized the cost of baby stuff such as diapers so I always seemed to be $50 shy of paying the bills every month. Working at a real job was too much of a slippery slope, I simply could not afford to make ends meet. I had recognized that “this new internet thing” had huge potential for making some extra cash to pay the bills so I was actively researching how the internet could make money when, while at work, I received an email from my buddy Chuck asking for help in his internet business.

I responded to Chuck’s email within seconds after he sent it out to his friends and family email list. Chuck was working with James Martell teaching a system of making money online and boy did I nail it. Within only a few months my income from affiliate programs was at $15,000 / month and quickly shot up to $60,000 / month. I couldn’t stay at the “real job” any longer…

With that kind of money pouring in every month, I fired my boss!

Question #4

KRIS: I know that you are an avid writer, speaker, and Super Affiliate.  One of your most successful projects is “the VEO Report: A Comprehensive Guide to Building Stable Search  Engine Results.”  Can you tell us more about this project?

COLIN: The onslaught of requests to speak at industry events such as Affiliate Summit and The System Seminar (which I will be presenting at this week-end) has been overwhelming and flattering!

The VEO Report was created shortly after I attended a Search Engine Strategies conference in New York City.

As I previously mentioned, I was following James Martell’s system and my sites got completely obliterated from the search engines. My massive amounts of income were literally wiped out over night. It was a Google update dubbed “Florida” that destroyed my entire traffic flow.

I was faced with a choice, either go back to a real job or persevere and find out what Google actually really wanted. Since I am now un-employable, the real job was not an option so it was off to SES with the goal of meeting a Google engineer to hear from the horse’s mouth what Google really wanted for websites to rank.

I happened to be in the right place at the right time and got lots of one to one time with an incredibly nice Google engineer, Matt Cutts.

I went through the Martell system with Matt, every step of the way Matt cringed and shook his head. During the course of the conference I made notes about the conversations I had with Matt.

By the end of the conference I had a huge stack of notes which I transcribed into a Word document and mailed it to my friends that had been using the Martell system and saw their income vanish at the same time I suffered my downturn. One of my friends called with immense enthusiasm about the notes I sent her.

My friend said, “Oh my Colin! Do you realize you have an information product here.”

Since then I have had the joy of helping others succeed. Helping others is my core mission in everything I pursue whether it is in business or in personal life.

Please take a moment to grab a copy of my complimentary internet marketing report right now.

Question #5

KRIS: Can you share with us what a day-in-the-life of Colin McDougall is like?

COLIN: My days go something like this:

(1) Wake up
(2) Put coffee on
(3) Look at my “action board” listing my current project
(4) Put a task list together of stuff I need done today and then “just do it” (or outsource it)
(5) Stop work after about 2 hours and play with my kids.

Question #6

KRIS: If you could trade shoes with anyone in the world who would it be and why?

COLIN: There is nobody I would trade places with in this world because I like my life way too much!

Question #7

KRIS: Share with us your most embarrassing moment…

COLIN: Hmmm, embarrassing moments….There’s lots of those but I would say that it was at the first conference I presented at. I saw hundreds of eyes looking at me and lots of cameras pointing at me. My mind went blank from the stage and I said “Sorry folks I am incredibly nervous and don’t have a clue as to where I am at in my presentation.”

I managed to save myself by saying “Hey, you guys spent tons of money to come to this conference and you don’t need me talking at you. Do you want to do question and answer time?”

That is exactly what they wanted and I performed really well after that. I could see people’s eyes light up as they experience “ah ha” moments.

Question #8

KRIS: You’ve been in affiliate marketing for many years now.  Can you share with us one or three secrets that have been shared with you (or discovered by you) that may help our readers take their affiliate marketing business to the next level?

COLIN: The biggest secret to creating a successful online business is begin by removing the search engines from your thoughts.

Begin by establishing a USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Use your personal experiences and creativity to establish a USP.

Once you have created your unique angle into an industry register a domain that can be branded. If you are confused about what that means, there is a simple rule I have for this:

If your domain name can be placed on a hat for marketing purposes, then it is “brandable.”

When it comes to creating content for your website, again, proceed as though the search engines don’t exist. Write your copy first, then refine and edit for search engines. This is a key element for creating a VEO website. Visitor’s first and search engines second, really focus on what you can do to build a relationship with your visitors.

A good way to think about establishing a relationship with your visitors is to take a lesson from the music industry. You want to create a base of enthusiastic fans that will devour whatever you put out there.

An example of this is my admiration for the legendary rock band Rush. After attending the System Seminar in Chicago, I am flying to Denver to meet with my Mastermind group and I spent MAJOR cash on row 2 center stage tickets.

Why did I drop so much cash?

Because Rush has built a relationship with me. I know that when they put out an album or go on tour they are going to deliver to my expectations. I am a loyal follower and always will be.

Think about how you can create your fan base in your industry.

I reveal all my secrets in my business mentorship club to help people create the foundation that will serve to build your fan base.

Question #9

KRIS: Tell us why Canada is the most beautiful place in the world to live and work…

COLIN: I love British Columbia in particular because of the amazing natural beauty. I purchase a 27 foot travel trailer a few years ago so I could enjoy the mountains, lakes and rivers of BC.

Run a search at Google for British Columbia stuff and check out some of the pictures you see and you will realize why I love it here!

Question #10

KRIS: Name one person in the affiliate industry you admire and tell us why?

COLIN: There are lots of people that have helped me and I admire in this business. There are 2 people that I must publicly thank though.

The 2 people I admire most in this industry are:

(1) Rosalind Gardner
(2) Michael Campbell

Why?

Both Rosalind Gardner (click here to check out Rosalind’s “Meet the Affiliates” Interview here on PJN) and Michael Campbell returned my phone calls after my earnings plummeted to help me understand the right way to run an online business.

Ros and Michael have become very good friends of mine and I am eternally grateful to both. Both of these amazing people are down-to-earth people that are willing to take the time to help folks that need it.

Thanks Ros and Michael!

Meet the Affiliates

Welcome to Week #3 of the Pepperjam Network “Meet the Affiliates” Interview Series!

This week I interview Rosalind Gardner.  Rosalind is one of the most recognized super affiliates in the world and has been sharing her secrets through best-selling books, blogging, and public speaking for years.  If you don’t know or haven’t followed Rosalind’s work you are in store for a treasure trove of great content.

I know you will enjoy Rosalind’s interview and we hope that you bookmark the Pepperjam Network Blog (do people still do that?) or simply click here to receive future “Meet the Affiliates” interviews via e-mail.

Question #1

KRIS: 1) Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?
ROSALIND: I am happily single, child-free and live in Perfection… um, Penticton, British Columbia which is located in Canada’s peaches and beaches playground - the Okanagan Valley. In 2006, I convinced my (unofficially) adopted brother Ed to move into my way-too-big-for-one house, previously shared only with my very large, diabetic cat, Vic.

Question #2

KRIS: When and how did you first get involved in affiliate marketing.  Please share your story…

ROSALIND: Sometime back the dark ages of late 1997, I happened upon a banner ad that read “Webmasters Make Money” which was too enticing (and at the time, quite unusual) to ignore, so I clicked on it and found myself on the affiliate program signup page for the One and Only dating service network which included a cursory explanation about affiliate marketing.  Recurring commissions of fifty percent of the monthly membership fee sounded like a decent prospect, so I started a little dating service review site for singles called Sage-Hearts.com. The site is still my primary affiliate breadmaker.

Question #3

KRIS: What are some of your favorite online resources for learning more about affiliate marketing?

ROSALIND: There are SO many writers sharing good information about affiliate marketing that one could easily spend all day perusing blogs rather than working, so I limit my reading to just one or two on any given workday.

For staying on top of industry news, my favorites include Linda Buquet’s “5 Star Affiliate Programs Blog” and Revenews.com. My best source of commission-increasing information comes from phone chats with my Super Affiliate friends and colleagues, however.

Question #4

KRIS: What are your top two (2) favorite books of all time and top three (3) favorite musical groups?

ROSALIND: I’ve consumed copious quantities of books in nearly 5 decades, so my ‘favorites’ tend to be those that left a significant impression in recent months and years. In that vein, I’d have to say Thomas L. Friedman’s “The World is Flat” and Al Gore’s “Assault on Reason” are my recent favorites.

With thousands of tunes plugged into the iPod, I’m even more loathe to name favorite music. Basically, crank the volume on any Irish jig or 40’s swing to get me dancin’.

Question #5

KRIS: What is a day-in-the-life of Rosalind Gardner like?

ROSALIND: Because the opportunity to make money is virtually limitless, and time spent with family and friends doing the fun stuff is not, I try to structure my work so as to make the most of the latter.

To that end, I start each day by appreciating the beautiful view from either my hot tub or pool (or both) and usually cap them off in the same manner.

Once every couple of weeks I put in one to three long ‘working’ days during which I spend several hours writing blog posts, articles and product reviews; days that are followed by long stretches of primarily free time for travel, gardening, hiking and otherwise having fun.

Even on the ‘off’ days, however, I often make time to respond to blog commentary and support tickets that can not otherwise be handled by my assistant. Because I like what I do and do what I like (topical blogging), attending to business on my free-time days never feels like work.

Question #6

KRIS: Among other regular contributions to the affiliate marketing industry, you are a regular columnist for Revenue Magazine (BTW - I always look forward to reading your piece every issue!).  Can you share with our readers what you feel is the best advice you’ve ever given as part of your column in Revenue Magazine?

ROSALIND: Thanks very much for the kind words about my Affiliate’s Corner column, Kris. I appreciate having YOU as a reader!

Of the 19 articles that I’ve written for Revenue in the last 3 years, I’d have to say that my “Entrepreneur Sees the Light” piece (click here to read article) in the March/April 2006 issue offers critical advice that is too often over-looked by new affiliates - that having passion for your topic is essential to success in business and affiliate blogging.

I see way too many bloggers start sites around topics that they determine to be potentially lucrative, yet about which they know little or nothing. They end up frustrated and burnt-out  trying to research and produce regular content, while their earnings remain commensurate with their knowledge, i.e. little to nothing.

Ergo, starting with subject matter about which one you very keen and enjoy sharing information is integral to making the big bucks.

Question #7

KRIS: You authored the book “Make a Fortune Promoting Other People’s Stuff Online.” Can you share with us a few tips from that book? Wait…you’re not done yet. You’ve also authored one of the best-selling and successful e-books of all time called “The Super Affiliate Handbook: How I Made $436797 in One Year Selling Other People’s Stuff Online.” Is there an additional tip or two from that book that you can share?

ROSALIND: Published in 2007 by McGraw-Hill, “Make a Fortune…”  is actually a digest version of the “Super Affiliate Handbook”, which was originally self-published in 2003 and has gone through umpteen revisions in order to remain current in our ever-evolving industry.

One tip from the Super Affiliate Handbook that has generated loads of favorable reader response is about negotiating commission increases. Apparently, even some Super Affiliates didn’t realize that commission rates aren’t written in stone.

I suggest that affiliates who consistently send copious amounts of sales-producing traffic to their merchant partners’ sites have every right to request a percentage or fee-based increase.

I also recommend that they keep an alternate program in their back pocket to use as leverage just in case their request is denied. Pulling the first program and vigorously promoting the second often encourages the merchant of the first program to change their decision when that Super Affiliate is no longer contributing to their bottom line.

Question #8

KRIS: My guess is that as an accomplished author, international speaker, and uber successful affiliate marketer you’ve traveled the world many times. Tell us about the most amazing place you’ve ever been to around the world. Tell us about your experience there…

ROSALIND: You guess correctly, Kris, and the world is so full of amazing places that once again it’s difficult to choose a single location. I do, however, have a preference for traveling to countries where the people are primarily Buddhist and the aggressive ‘me-first’ mind-set is practically non-existent.

Imagine any major roadway in North America and you know you’d be dead meat in mere moments for simply having the audacity to believe that you had a right to walk to the other side without benefit of a traffic light to limit homicidal tendences.

Yet in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) I can casually and without fear, cross a 6-lane roadway teaming with hundreds of motorists, knowing each will veer slightly to give way to pedestrians and whatever else might be in their projected path.

Such co-operation and respect is a beautiful thing to experience. I also appreciate that they serve my favorite breakfast food, Pho.

Question #9

KRIS: Name one person in the affiliate industry you admire and tell us why?

ROSALIND: Name just ONE person? Impossible.

With all the b.s. affiliate marketing info sold by wannabe’s and pretenders, I most admire those Super Affiliates who worked hard to achieve success in the industry and continue to work as affiliate marketers, while honestly and openly sharing their knowledge and good information with others who may just be starting out. Among those people, Anik Singal and Jeremy Palmer are two of the best examples.

At the top of my list, I put my good friend Colin McDougall, who not only recovered from business-busting bad advice to build a highly successful affiliate business, but whose generosity for sharing information is unparalleled. If we all had 1/10th Colin’s tenacity, everyone would be uber-successful.

Thanks Rosalind!

Question #1

KRIS:
Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?

SCOTT:
I live in Mineola, Texas, a small town of 5700 people that is 90 miles east of Dallas. I am originally from Alexandria, Louisiana, but have spent the last 10 years in Florida before moving to Texas in February of 2007. I have always loved East Texas. I used to come here when I was a kid to visit my Grandmother. I lived in East Texas during my days as a Kinney Shoes store manager in the 80’s, so when the hurricanes of 2004 started the wheels turning in looking for a new place to live, this was a fairly easy choice.

I live with Judi, my girlfriend of 5 years. We are not married (shhhh) but we might as well be and likely will be some day. She has four children who are grown and are scattered throughout the Southeastern US. I never had children.

Judi and I are both involved in Community Theater. This is how we met. You can often find us performing in plays or other events being hosted and run by the theater. We are both not only comfortable in front of a crowd, but we crave it from time to time. This is a lot of work and takes a lot of time and pays nothing, but I couldn’t imagine not doing it. We’ve both been involved with various Theaters for 15+ years and at last count have been involved in 60+ plays between us.

We have two Standard Poodles, Creole and Gumbo (creoleandgumbo.com), that keep us busy and keep us quite entertained. They are wonderful dogs. They both have an amazingly calm and friendly demeanor and the town of Mineola, TX is getting to know them. We take them to Dairy Queen for treats now and then and we take them to all of the festivals and outdoor events the town has. They love people and they love to be out and about town. They especially love going to the bank because the drive-in teller gives them treats.

New local project…MineolaLive.com.

Question #2

KRIS: When and how did you first get involved in affiliate marketing? Can you share your story…

SCOTT: In a nutshell, I was a merchant and got tired of affiliates outperforming me due to the flexibility and diversity available to affiliates. The Affiliate Marketing industry allows someone to sit at home on their laptop and run circles around a merchant who has inventory, shelf space, employees, utility bills and so many other expenses and burdens to deal with on a daily basis. These elements of being a merchant keep you from being nimble and able to ‘shift gears’ on a moment’s notice when opportunity arises. Of course some of the large merchants with deep pockets have this flexibility, but that was not my case.

I thought about affiliate marketing for years before I actually started it, mostly because I did not know how to get started or what or where an affiliate network was. Once I found my first affiliate network, I have not really looked back since.

I got in to affiliate marketing at the tail end of the days when you could stick a datafeed site out there and get sales within 24 hours. My first dedicated affiliate site immediately started making me money and I was shocked at that. Even more shocking was how quickly that money stopped once the duplicate content filter took effect and my site was buried. That was an early lesson in diversity in the affiliate marketing world.

Question #3

KRIS: You are one of the most respected (and admired) affiliates in the industry and you’ve been given prestigious awards, including the Affiliate Summit Pinnacle Award for “Affiliate of the Year.” This is simply awesome.  Based on your recognition and achievement, what advise can you give other aspiring affiliates that may lead to them one day being honored as “Affiliate of the Year?”

SCOTT: First of all, thank you for your kind words. I touched on my biggest piece of advice in my last answer, diversity. I’ll elaborate now.

I often consult with people just entering the world of Affiliate Marketing. The very first thing I tell them to do and the one thing I harp on the most seem to conflict each other, but they are the two elements to success in this business as far as I am concerned. I will outline them for your readers.

1) Find something…a hobby, a profession, a line of products…or whatever, that you are knowledgeable of and passionate about. Take this and run with it. Do some research on the topic. Find ways to monetize this theme with a web site. Find a way to make your web site different from any other web site on the topic then dedicate the time, resources and focus necessary to complete the task. BUT…before diving in to this task, keep a few things in mind.

A) Make sure you can monetize it. There have to be merchants with affiliate programs. There needs to be a market for your topic that is large enough to give you different marketing channels. For instance, there needs to be affiliate opportunity, contextual advertising (Adsense, PJ Ads) opportunity and other ways for you to make money on this site.

B) Make sure your topic is sustainable. For instance, if your topic of interest is transferring VHS video tape to DVD, this might not be a good idea because in a few years VHS will be right up there with 8-track tape. Certainly, as technology changes you can morph along with it, so this might not be the perfect example, but I think it gets my point across.

C) Make sure there is a niche (or more than one) within the broad topic that you can exploit. Start broad, then start chipping away at niches within your broad topic. For example, if I start with a site about photography, I can then move in to underwater photography, negative image photography, time lapse etc. from there. Make sure your broad topic will accommodate this logic as it is essential to making your site different than everyone else’s site.

2) Develop content on your topic. Write, take photos, video is hot these days. -Sidetrack Story- Judi and her sister, who has recently moved to East Texas and is living with us while she gets settled etc., sit in Judi’s office for hours on end and watch videos on YouTube. This sometimes leads to them making purchases based on the videos they have seen. They often call me in and show me something and say something like “Maybe we should be doing that….” I am not one to sit and watch video on the web, but there are a LOT of people who do. This has prompted me to start development on a localized, all video site. -/Sidetrack Story

Develop your site out using anything you can to make it unique. People love tables with facts and figures, cool widgets they can play with or anything else that they can interact with or share.

This is where I contradict myself.

3) Diversify Diversify Diversify !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forget about your cool site as discussed above, once it is up and running and you are happy with it. I am NOT saying to abandon it, but shift gears to something different.

Do something totally different. Make a coupon site, make a price comparison, make a review site…anything except what you have already done. Work on running some product-based PPC for products you are familiar with. Work on developing a newsletter from a blog or chat site. Work on developing a Facebook application…ANYTHING, but something completely different. You can find another topic all together and repeat the steps above if you want, but I still encourage you to try completely different things.

Know going in that in this business, I am happy if 1 in 5 things I try actually pay off. In an industry with so many variables, some visible and some latent, a 20% success rate is great, in my opinion at least!

I know this sounds crazy, but I have learned twice the hard way in this business that you can never rely heavily on any given:

• Merchant
• Vertical market
• Network
• Promotional method
• Web site
• Business arrangement
• Affiliate manager
• Traffic source

…or anything else. DO NOT allow yourself to make more than 40% of your income from any single element listed above or any other single element. Things change. Merchants lose their mind and make terrible decisions that destroy their affiliate program. Affiliate managers seem to come and go like the wind in this industry. While a little bit of loyalty can go a long way in an affiliate/affiliate manager relationship, do not hem yourself in here and never let the relationship become personal. Keep it business.

Most of all, Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan. It is REAL easy to get sidetracked in this industry with so many ways to go. Plan out your mission and execute it. This is something I have struggled with and continue to struggle with, but I am getting better at it since I have removed many of the distractions from my professional life.

Question #4

KRIS: What are some of your favorite online resources for learning more about affiliate marketing?

SCOTT: I keep up with many online resources. I seem to get the best information at Revenews, but there are too many to name that I at least read regularly.

Question #5

KRIS: Tell us what an average day in the life of Scott Hazard is like…

SCOTT: I wake up and have my coffee while looking at yesterday’s stats and reading the news of the day. I sit outside on my back patio if the weather is cooperative and let the Poodles run and take care of their morning business. Then we go inside and get started on the day’s work list. I’ll admit that I am not rigidly structured in my work agenda, but I am usually working on something that takes focus early in the day. Often times things will come up that I will deal with, then I move back to what I was doing before.

I try to work for at least most of the hours between 9 and 5. I find that if I am able to do this, my social life is much better because all of our friends etc. operate on the 9-5 work schedule so this allows us to fit in to the activities and such with our friends and community.

I often find myself sitting in the living room with my laptop in my lap and working my way through my favorite evening TV shows. After years of trying, I am still pretty well unable to unplug from my business unless I am actively doing something else. I seem to default to work and rely on something else to take me away. For this reason, we belong to several associations, clubs etc. in town and try to get out at least a few nights a week and on weekends.

Question #6

KRIS: When you were a kid what did you dream of becoming when you grew up?

SCOTT: HAHA. My first professional aspiration, when I was about 5, was to be a trash man. I thought the way they rolled those big 55 gallon barrels down the street was really, really cool!

Throughout my preteen & teenage years I idolized Tom Brokaw. I thought, and still do think, that it would be totally cool to be in front of millions of people every day delivering the news. I realize now that there is a LOT more to a job like that than just sitting down in front of a camera for 30 minutes a day. With the exception of working as a radio DJ while I was in college, I have never really pursued that. It could be said that I pursue this with my theater activities. Anyone who knows me knows I am a ham.

Mostly what I have always wanted was the ability to be autonomous and do something that I really enjoy doing…something that is not such a…job! The fact is that I really enjoy thinking up crazy ways to sell things and I really enjoy fooling with web sites and online stuff. I have also always enjoyed sharing with others and helping people who are willing to take the time to learn, so I am doing exactly what I want to do in my affiliate marketing and consulting endeavors.

Question #7

KRIS: In 50 words or less (hahaha), what does the future of affiliate marketing look like?

SCOTT: It looks good. There is still a lot of corruption and abuse in this industry, but it seems to be slowly moving in the right direction. If the industry can survive until the networks and other entities realize the things that are truly harming the industry and act to fix them, it will be fine. If those with the power and influence in this industry don’t continue to make the right decisions, or in some cases don’t start to make the right decisions, this industry could be in trouble over the long run, but I try to remain optimistic.

I will, however, admit that I continue to branch out in my online (and offline) activities beyond just affiliate marketing. Again…diversity is key.

Question #8

KRIS: What is the next big money making opportunity in affiliate marketing?

SCOTT: Anti-social media. I think many people are getting tired of all the social stuff and will soon revert to their caves and live as hermits. OK, I am just kidding.

I think we will see large advances in video streaming and linking technology real soon that will change how the affiliate marketing industry, as well as e-commerce, works. You will never be able to try on a pair of shoes or pants over the internet, but I think we are approaching a time where video will take over for static images and consumers will start to expect to see video from every angle of an item before purchasing it.

From the marketing standpoint video is obviously gaining ground daily, but there are still some out there who deny its usefulness. Those affiliates will be part of the propwash if they don’t adapt.

Question #9

KRIS: Can a new coupon Web site (i.e. CouponMountain.com), cash back (i.e. Cashbaq.com), or search-engine marketing affiliate (i.e. Clicks2Customers) make money these days or have these opportunities dried up?

SCOTT: These opportunities are still out there. It’s not as easy as it once was, but what in life that is good is? As the economy continues to slump, coupon sites and cash back sites will continue to grow.

As long as an affiliate adds value to the merchant and helps the customer in some way, there will always be a way for an affiliate marketer to make money. If all of the networks dried up tomorrow and the industry as we know it came to a screeching halt, there will still be merchants who are willing to pay me and others like me to send them buying customers. It is as simple as that in my opinion.

Question #10

KRIS: Name one person in the affiliate industry you admire and tell us why?

SCOTT: If I can only use one name, it is Pat Grady. I met Pat when we were both very young in this industry and we have been very good friends since then. With both of us realizing the potential long-term benefits, we made a pact early on to be open with each other about what we are doing, the methods we use, what works and what doesn’t and every other aspect of our businesses. Over time, this relationship grew very strong and gets stronger every day. We have made our mistakes and we have both learned from the other’s mistakes.

In an industry where trusting others can be so dangerous, to have a friend like this has countless benefits. From having someone to listen with an objective ear when I am bitching about something, to having someone to bounce crazy ideas off of, the importance of having this kind of relationship in an industry of “lone wolves” is invaluable.

To top this off, Pat remains one of the single smartest people I know. He often provides insight that I could never have gained otherwise. I won’t say that we always agree because we often do not, but to have someone who you trust implicitly who knows the business is the closest that many of us will ever get to having a business partner.

Large companies have one big advantage in that they are (hopefully) staffed with brilliant and intelligent people who can create an atmosphere of synergy by leveraging all of their individual knowledge and experiences. This is where most affiliates fall far short, but my relationship with Pat Grady has allowed me to grow and I can only hope that I am as helpful to him as he has been to me.

I also have to say Kristen Kinsey (since Sam had multiple answers to this question too). Kristen is an OPM who only came onto the scene a short time back, but she is bright, honest and always energetic and willing to do whatever she can to help someone succeed in her programs. She enthusiastically portrays the ideals of her clients and she is not afraid to admit when she is wrong about something. Kristen is wise beyond her years and her programs will always be attractive to me because of her association.

Pepperjam Network Meet the Affiliates

Welcome to the Pepperjam Network “Meet the Affiliates” Interview Series!

Many of you may be curious where we got the idea for “Meet the Affiliates.” Well, first of all, the idea comes from the “Meet the Pepperjam Team” Video Series that Pepperjam conducted throughout 2007.

The “Meet the PJ Team” was a weekly video series featuring employees from Pepperjam - the great thing about the series was that it was super entertaining to our readers and also gave outsiders (Non-Pepperjammers) a glimpse into what it’s like to work at one of the coolest and fastest growing companies in the United States. Throughout the taping of the videos (we did over 60 employee interviews!!!) we continued to get incredibly positive feedback from members of the internet marketing community.

Here are the rules…

The Pepperjam Network “Meet the Affiliates” Interview Series will feature an original up-close interview with an affiliate marketer every Friday.  Priority will be given to Pepperjam Network affiliates, but that is not a requirement to share your story.  If you’d be interested in being interviewed please submit your request here - please make sure to tell us why you think your story is especially entertaining or educational and worth sharing with our readers.

As the series progresses we will do out best to ask questions that both entertain and educate!  We encourage you to comment on any of the interviews, as well as ask follow-up questions of the interviewee.

Lastly, if you are a blogger or just someone with a network of likeminded affiliate marketing friends, we encourage you to share our interviews series with anyone who you think may benefit. Also, since you won’t want to miss an interview once it’s published I encourage you to join the Feedburner Pepperjam Network RSS Feed, which is located at the top of this page or by clicking here.

Well…let’s get on to the interview!

Meet the Affiliates: Interview #1

Sam Harrelson

Question #1

KRIS:
When did you first get involved in affiliate marketing? Tell us the story of how you got started…

SAM:
I initially got my start in affiliate marketing on the email and lead gen side of things. I taught 10th grade English after moving back to South Carolina from graduate school in 2002 but realized I needed a job that was closer to my home. So, I stumbled into a position with an email marketing firm in Columbia, SC. We started a CPA network (AdDrive) and that’s when I got heavily involved in the affiliate side of things.

Question #2

KRIS:
Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?

SAM:
I live in Asheville, NC (in the western part of the state in the mountains so we consider ourselves our own little state) with my wife of four years, our six month old daughter, a boston terrier, a labrador retriever, a siberian huskey and four fire bellied toads.

Question #3

KRIS: What are some of your favorite online resources for learning more about affiliate marketing?

SAM: My favorite place to stay in the loop on affiliate marketing is Twitter (by far). I’ve been an active user since October 2006 and have 2,000 people that follow me and that I follow. Most of the affiliates I interact with on a daily or weekly basis are active on Twitter and if there’s breaking news in the affiliate world (or in general), I usually hear about it first on Twitter. Along with Twitter, I subscribe to about 50 or so affiliate, search and performance marketing blogs that I read daily through RSS.

I’ve also become a big fan of podcasts lately, so I’m enjoying the auditory productions from people like Scott Jangro, Shawn Collins and Lisa Picarille.

Question #4

KRIS: Can you share a few success tips for affiliates who are new to affiliate marketing?

SAM: My biggest tip for people new to affiliate marketing comes from a big mistake I made early in my career… do what you love or are passionate about. While starting outin affiliate marketing, I went after every penny I could and viewed my time doing affiliate stuff as “work.” At the end of the day, I wasn’t happy with myself or my profession and went back to teaching. Somewhere along the way, I realized that I (and others) can and should combine interests or passions with the tools provided by affiliate marketing to find fulfillment both emotionally and financially. For instance, I love NASCAR and Science Fiction and have sites about both of them that blend my interests with affiliate marketing. Running those sites is definitely not “work.” So, follow your passions and be inventive.

Question #5

KRIS: Name your top three favorite musical groups.

SAM: In revolving order: Wilco, Ryan Adams and Willie Nelson. I’m also a big 60’s jazz and Grateful Dead fan. I tend towards the indie “alt-country” genre, but I listen to most everything (except for most contemporary mainstream music.. what happened to good music??).

Question #6

KRIS: What is your favorite movie of all time?

SAM: I’d have to say the original Star Wars is still my favorite movie of all time because of the lasting impact on myself and my generation. If you were a child of the 80’s and didn’t know every line to Star Wars, you weren’t cool. Outlaw Josey Wales is a close second.

Question #7

KRIS: It is well established that over the past several years thousands of affiliates have used pay-per-click, SEO, loyalty, and coupon strategies to make a lot of money in affiliate marketing. Aside from these popular promotional methods, what other areas of affiliate marketing hold the most promise?

SAM: As the web continues to evolve (and we change our user habits along with it), affiliate marketers are going to have to engage with the new paradigms of marketing that are being created around more social sites (I’m not a big fan of the term “social media” because I think the web is inherently social). Social networks, niche community sites and highly customizable platforms like Twitter are going to demand more from marketers than just posting up a banner or bidding on a click. So, as affiliate marketers, we are going to have to engage increasingly niche and fragmented audiences in order to stay relevant and profitable. There are too many variables for both the marketer and the community to give one universal prescription for how to do this, but the days of broadcasting mass messages and expecting a decent ROI are over (thank goodness!).

Question #8

KRIS: Are you a full-time affiliate marketer?  What is a normal day in the life of Sam Harrelson like?

SAM: Yes I am a full time affiliate marketer/blogger/podcaster. Along with running the niche sites I mentioned above, I also do consulting for affiliates, networks and companies looking to move more into the social web space. On the side, I still teach a couple of classes as an adjunct professor at nearby Gardner-Webb university.

My normal day has become a lot less normal since the birth of our daughter. But roughly, the morning is spent checking stats and email and setting everything up for the afternoon. I do most of my work in the afternoon and at night since I work with a number of people on the west coast. In between all of that, I’m constantly checking my feed reader. I subscribe to about 500 feeds now, so it gets rather bloated if I don’t check in every few hours. Plus, my feed reader is my main place of news consumption as well as checking in on the outside world.

I normally post a few times a day on CostPerNews as I see things that are interesting that I need to write about. I also do a daily 22 minute podcast that I try to fit in somewhere around 2pm just before I get to my main working time. Somewhere in there, I like to get in a few minutes of jogging and playing basketball but those often get sacrificed (especially since the arrival of the baby!). My wife is a physician so her schedule is very erratic and she’s often on call or working late at night. So, the idea of me having office hours is laughable.

Thankfully, I love what I do and life/work/play all blends together pretty well!

Question #9

KRIS: Name one person in the affiliate industry you admire and tell us why?

SAM: There are so many! I’ll try to narrow it down by saying that I admire Shawn Collins for his willingness to experiment and innovate ahead of the curve while keeping one foot in the traditional space, Connie Berg for her tenacity, Brian Littleton for his humbleness and integrity, Jonathan (Trust) for his willingness to always be frank with me (even when I don’t want to hear it) and Pat Grady for his brains.

Thanks so much to Kris and the Pepperjam team for including me in the series! SH

No - thank you Sam for your participating in the PJN “Meet the Affiliates” Interview Series!
