As of this morning, Twitter went down and Facebook showed signs of having internal issues.

While this may not seem to be a big deal to many people, for those us who live with and use more than one social network at a time,  it’s a BIG deal. No posts, no tweets…suddenly it’s all quiet!

All of the major news outlets have picked up the story, leaving it on their front pages since it’s big news.

But what does it mean? It shows us how integral social networking has become to our everyday lives. Not only do we use social networking to talk with our friends & get our news, but it’s a key element in many advertising and marketing plans worldwide. It’s how many businesses reach out to their consumers.

It’s not just about finding your high school buddies or tweeting about your peanut butter lunch. It’s also how advertisers get to communicate with their users and make them feel like they are part of the process. Take that away and it all feels different.

With Twitter down- and FB on the fritz, many us suddenly feel disconnected. I know it sounds silly- but it’s true.

I know that  both will be back up and running soon– if not already, but the short outage and the following news converage show us how important they are in our lives and keeping us all connected.

In just a few days time, I’ll be heading up to the Big Apple with a crew of Pepperjammers to attend Affiliate Summit East. This will be my first time at Affiliate Summit, and in honor of this undoubtedly momentous occasion, I’ve prepared a haiku.

Embarrassingly amateur? Of course!

Completely self-serving and a tad self-aggrandizing? You betcha.

The sentiment is all the same, however, as I’m very much looking forward to my inaugural trip to Affiliate Summit. Pepperjam is going to be situated in booths 2201 and 2203, and I (along with several other ‘Jamers) will be wandering around the room shaking hands, cutting ribbons and kissing babies. Well, maybe not those last two, but I’ll definitely be found in and around the Summit, so come up and say “Hi!” (There might be a free drink in it for you if you greet me with “Ello, guvnah!”)

Personally, I’m looking forward to going to the “Creating Lasting Publisher and Advertiser Relationships” session. As someone who works with both, I can comment first hand on the significance of fostering a good relationship between a publisher and an advertiser. Communication is vital in this industry (and in life) and without it, where would we be?
