Hi everyone!

Last week I was at Affiliate Summit East in New York! The whole thing was amazing— meeting new people, checking out the booths, listening to the speakers, and the parties! I learned a lot while I was out there and am thrilled that I was able to be a part. (Thanks Pepperjam Network!)

There was one speech that really resonated with me. It was Peter Shankman’s speech on Social Media. For those of who may not be familiar with Peter, he is the founder and CEO of The Geek Factory.

The  speech was about how to use Social Media and use it well. The points are simple and easy to follow. He showed how easy it is for anyone to use social media to promote themselves or their brand!

Peter’s 4 things to keep in mind when using social media are :  1. Transparency 2. Relevance 3. Brevity 4. Top of Mind Presence.

I got to thinking about social media — with so many avenues for it,  the whole process may seem daunting for lots of people. Do I Facebook? Or Tweet? How about MySpace? What do I say? Should I just promote? What am I supposed to do?

What I learned is that the best way to do it is to be open about who you are or what your product is. Then be relevant for your customers. Don’t put stuff out there that they can’t relate to. Be brief. Sometimes we try too hard and the message is lost in all the words. And lastly— be on their mind. Do things that make you stand out from the crowd. Don’t worry about having this be the next YouTube sensation…look to get your message out there well and if you’ve done your job right, then people will respond.

Also… don’t worry about what social media you are using— whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, blogging or anything else! Do what you feel comfortable with, and where you think you might reach the best audience. Get out there. Try it all— see what works best! Play with it. It’s supposed to be fun.

You’re just a few tweets , posts or blogs away!
