I was approached by Wiley Publishing in the summer of 2007 to write a book on search-engine optimization (SEO).
To say that I was flattered and excited about the prospect of writing a book would be an understatement – I was blown away and totally intimidated by the daunting task of writing a book for a major book publisher….but I said YES!!!
I was able to negotiate a nice contract with a multi-thousand dollar advance. I was also able to negotiate writing beyond just SEO, including chapters on monetizing Web traffic (aka, affiliate marketing), generating traffic and building buzz through social networks like Twitter, Digg, and Facebook, and leveraging pay per click platforms like Google Adwords. I was very proud of the final book.
If you haven’t read the book you can buy it HERE from Amazon and get it for under $20. You can also buy the book everywhere books are sold – I’ve received e-mails from people around the world who shared their stories of finding the book at their local Barnes & Noble or community book store.
So……..the purpose of this post isn’t to promote the book so much as it is to wish it a Happy Birthday!!!
My book was officially published on 4/7/08. Today (4/7/09) makes it one year old.
When I was approached I was told by the publisher that they thought I could sell 10,000 copies in the first year – they said that if I sold 10K copied that the book would be a raging success and I would be invited to write an update to the book (and maybe even additional books).
Fast forward to today – we’ve sold over 15,000 books (over 50% more than expected) and I’ve not only been invited to write an update to the book, but I’ve been offered two additional opportunities by the publisher to write separate books!
I’ve met with other notable authors who published books around the same time and my book has outsold all of them. It’s a book that has mainstream appeal – basically, anyone who has a Web site can benefit from the book. Just a few weeks ago (during Elite Retreat) a young woman (our waitress) walked up to me and asked me if I was Kris Jones – I said yes…why? She said that she read my book cover to cover and that it’s become a sort of business bible to her as she attempts to grow her fledgling web design business.
The book has achieved best-seller status and has been the top ranked book in several subject areas, including search marketing and internet marketing, on many occasions since it was published.
