Meet the Affiliates: Interview #13

Garry Conn
Garry Conn
Internet Marketer, Blogging and Search Consultant
http://www.garryconn.com

Question #1

KRIS: Where do you live?  Are you married?  Any children? Animals?

GARRY: Hi Kris. I live in Clarksville, Tennessee, married and my wife and I have three kids and a new born baby boy due in the end of September.

Question #2

KRIS: When did you first get involved in affiliate marketing? Tell us the story of how you got started.

GARRY: I am no stranger to online business. My first online business was an online classifieds web site for aircrafts owner, brokers and dealers. I have long since sold that business many years ago. Over the years I have done quite a bit in the online world, at one point in time I even built and sold computers on eBay. It was only recently, within the last three years that I started to gain an interest in affiliate marketing.I quickly recognized how applying my previous Internet marketing skills for my own private business could be transferable towards helping others who need assistance in selling their own products and services. In this era of the Internet today, it is so much easier for business owners and product developers compared to the many years ago when I was on the other side of the fence. Today, advertisers, business owners and product developers have the luxury of working with successful companies such as Pepperjam to aid them in their successful ventures. My role in the mix fits like a glove.

Question #3

KRIS: What do you do when you’re not making money online? Do you have any pets, hobbies, a gnarly fetish?

GARRY: One of the greatest and most hard earned luxury of doing what I do affords me the ability to be there for my family, especially my children. My son, who is now ten years old, loves sports, baseball to be specific. Because I am not tied to a commitment with a corporate job, I am able enroll him into many various youth travel baseball leagues and tournaments, which is something he very much enjoys, which all wouldn’t be possible if I had a typical “slave to the man” corporate job. As far as hobbies go? Well, its at times hard to differentiate between what is hobby for me and true work. I love computers, the Internet and technology. I very much enjoy reading Popular Science, PCWorld and spend quite a bit of time on Chris Pirillo’s sites and I troll around quite a bit on TechCrunch. Modern day Internet technology fascinates me. Modern day mobile Internet technology is something that is really capturing my interest right at the moment. I absolutely love gadgets and I enjoy tinkers with things, although the result usually ends in me breaking something.Question #4

KRIS: Tell us about your Blog GarryConn.com?

GARRY: My blog sheds light and unlocks a lot of the mystery in the business of making money online. While I am not the strongest and most powerful teacher in this business, the information you get from my blog comes from the heart. On my blog, I speak my mind regardless of consequence. Needless to say, that has gotten myself into a little bit of trouble a few times here and there. But, it’s a blog and it is a place that is personal to me and I write on it because I enjoy it. It thrills me knowing that what I write actually helps people learn.

If you asked me back in 1998 if I would ever have an online journal, I would have thought you were crazy. I never really knew that I had a gift in writing until I started blogging. Blogging itself plays a huge role in what I do with Internet marketing and making money online. For many people who read my blog, its serves as a tool and a resource that aids them in their ventures of finding success with making money online.

I invest quite a bit of time interacting with my readers. I believe what people enjoy most about reading my blog is that I harbor an environment where people can let their guard down and open up a little bit. Building trust with my readership is huge. When people come and visit my blog day to day, I want them to feel secure and comfortable. In the business of Internet marketing and making money online, unfortunately a huge percentage of that lies in the scam side of business. Many people fall for gimmicks and tricks, my readers have a carefree time visiting my blog knowing that they can indeed trust the information that I publish and trust me as their teacher. That in itself is what makes my blog a huge success in my eyes. I treat my readers exactly how I would expect to be treated if I were reading a blog from someone else.

Question #5

KRIS: Can you share a few “how to” tips for becoming a successful affiliate marketer?

GARRY: Well, for me I have my unique style and blend in this business. My roots have always tied into search engine marketing. Back in 1999, with my first online business, I had no money to invest into advertising. At the time I had quickly recognized that Yahoo! as well as Deja.com were two of the most popular places where aircraft owners, brokers and dealers invested their time online. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about Yahoo! and the power of their Yahoo! Directory.

Over time, my web site landed many spots in their directory which funneled tons of traffic to my site. Deja.com, which is now Google Groups was a huge part in driving traffic to my site as well. I would send out mass broadcasts of airplanes that we had listed for sale into the rec.aviation.marketplace as well as many other related channels. Clients who listed their aircraft for sale on our web site loved it because we were getting their aircraft exposed and we sold them very quickly for them.

My site soon become one of the most powerful aircraft sales sites online and still remains so today. So search engine marketing has always been my strong suit. My roots are in search engine marketing and that will never change. My tip for anyone interested in this business would be to invest time into researching how search engines work, specifically Google, and to never burn a bridge with them. Search engines are here to help people find things as well as to help people such as myself get my information indexed in them so that it can be found.

Question #6

KRIS: Can you share a few tips on building blog readership and becoming a successful blogger?

GARRY: Be yourself. Never pretend to be someone you are not. If you want to make money online, fine, that is great, but don’t start up a blog where you claim to be an expert in the business of making money online like many others do. In the long run, people will soon realize that you are fake and in return you would have made a lot more money online covering a different topic. Indeed, make money online but do so in a respectable method. Choose a niche or a topic that personally interests you. If you enjoy hot air balloons, start a blog about that. Never create a blog or a web site on a topic that you are not familiar with. Especially a blog that requires fresh content.

The process of publishing content on a topic site that you have no clue about will kill you. For bloggers, you should choose a topic that you have “SO MUCH” information stored in your head that you can’t possibly type fast enough to extract it onto digital paper. Some people in this industry will tell you differently, but I still hold true to my roots and will tell you that quality content counts for everything. Be yourself, be unique and build and maintain a blog or web site exactly how you’d expect someone else to do it and have fun. If you sell products or services on your site, sell only the products and services that you personally believe in and never trick people into buying things just so that you can make money. Trust is huge.

Question #7

KRIS: Share with us any current projects you are working on…

GARRY: I have been trolling around a lot in SitePoint and see that there are so many sites that sell sites in the SitePoint marketplace. I see a lot of wonderful things that take place and also too I see a lot of people taking advantage of the ignorance of others who want to make money online. With that said, I am in the process of building my first, “Ready Made” web site that will cater to the inexperienced yet inspired Internet marketer. My “Ready Made” niche site will come with close to 200 uniquely written and high quality articles related to the niche topic of Vacation Packages (http://www.vacationdealpackages.com).

When the site is done and ready for resell, I will be have created a site that has everything someone needs in order to make money online with a niche site. The process of reselling sites is pretty experimental for me, but I feel that this is something many people would appreciate me doing. The safety net I have in this project is the fact that if it doesn’t go well, then I’ll continue to do what I do and build these sites and simply keep them for myself. At this moment I own and operate well over 100 different sites.

Question #8

KRIS: Recently, you competed in a high profile blog contest with John Cow.  Tell us about the experience and share with us the results…

GARRY: Oh well you’re going to love this story. So yeah, indeed this was high profile. However, at the time, I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into. You see, the history with JohnCow.com goes back with the original owner and his two failed attempts to sell his blog for an extreme amount of money on SitePoint. So, when I caught the news that the original owner was yet again making a third attempt to sell his blog, I ran a post on my blog that provided my readers with a little history lesson showing trends is his previous attempts to scam out a buyer into purchasing his blog for an ungodly amount of money.

In the process of doing that, the owner of John Cow called me out and basically said that if I was all who I said to be then I would accept a friendly challenge against him in a contest to see who could build a niche blog and resell it for the most money in SitePoint. At the time, I didn’t know that this challenge was coming from the NEW owner of John Cow dot Com and I openly accepted the challenge. The first week of the challenge was great. I felt very good about myself and was very confident that I was going to win. Again, I was still under that assumption that the blog was still owned by the existing owner.

I had purchased my domain name, organized a team of volunteer writers, editors and publishers and started work. To do all this, created a contest to build up buzz about what I was doing and was able to land some really awesome sponsors who provided me with products to use for donations. Joel Comm (www.joelcomm.com) donated a copy of The Secret Classroom, which is worth well over $500 dollars, and Zach Hamisha, rep from WhiteSmoke.com, whom I met here in the Pepperjam Network, donated a $250 dollar software package as well. These donations were used to create a huge writing contest. Participants were to write a 250 word article that would be used and published on my niche blog for a chance to win these two wonderful prizes.

I had assigned a volunteer judge, Christine Senter (www.christinesenter.com), who is a professional writer with over 20 years experience, to review each of the article submissions. From there she helped me crown the winners. This contest allowed me the content needed for my niche blog. The second half to my mastermind strategy is the fact that I knew I would need a product so that I could generate email opt in subscriptions. People in SitePoint are big on mailing lists. So I knew that in order for me to really be successful in selling this site, I would need to have a product that could be used as incentive to get people to sign up for my mailing list.

Already knowing this, the second half of my contest was to offer the “Ultimate Grand Prize” which was having the exclusive opportunity for the winning author to expand on the article and create it into an eBook. From there, I had assigned yet another volunteer team to help with the author, Annie Binns (www.anniebinns.com) in producing this high quality eBook. I had a theme designer, Mark Mason (www.masonworld.com), a graphic designer, Forest Parks (www.therandomforest.com) and two editors, Mark Sierra (www.meandmydrum.com) and Christine Senter (www.thepromptwriter.com). In less than 30 days and with the help of all volunteer staff, we were able to successfully build a beautiful niche site that had over 25 high quality articles as well as a professionally published eBook to use towards incentive to get subscribers to join the mailing list.

In order to gain a better understanding of who I am and my background, you have to realize that I am not rich. I have a job just like everyone else does. Some people are plumbers while others are home builders. I happen to have a self made career with online business. With that being said, this business doesn’t and never has afforded me the option to invest money into any of my projects. In order to achieve what I want, I have to manufacture my own currency to use towards the project.

If you have played the popular board game, Monopoly, you would know that the game involves having “play money”. However, even though in the real world this “play money” holds no value, in game play it means everything. With that said, a huge part of what I do online is in printing massive amounts of this “play money” that represent value to interested prospects. In the case with the competition against John Cow, I could not by any means invest $750 dollars towards paying writers to produce content for me. My wife would have packed up the kids and left me.

So instead I manufactured my own currency to use towards compensation. Joel Comm donated The Secret Classroom because there was a value in him doing so. Not only are we online friends, but he too knew that this donation would be worth $500 dollars in free advertising and potential sales and the same with Zack from WhiteSmoke.com. I created value in something and exchanged it for something else. People have to understand that money isn’t the only form of currency in this world.

A large part of being successful in online business as well as offline business is in extracting alternative currency and exploiting the value in it to use towards getting the results that you want without having to spend your own money doing it. If you can successfully do that, then you can do anything.

With that said, I must mention too that during this whole process, I quickly realized that the owner of John Cow dot Com was no longer the original one, as the competition against him was pretty neck and neck. I was indeed, sweating it. In fact, about a week into the contest, I got a phone call from the new owner and he told me who he was. For those of you that don’t know, the new owner of John Cow dot Com is Jason Katzenback, a very successful and high profile Internet marketer. In the end, I did lose the competition.

My blog sold for $850 and his blog sold for close to $1500. However, I feel awesome knowing that just a very casual skilled individual, a stay at home dad, could indeed provide such a high level of competition against such a high profile icon in this industry. In fact, my highest bid was $800 dollars and Jason came in within 2 hours left on the auction and put the winning bid on my own site for $850 dollars. So today, Jason, owner of John Cow dot Com is indeed the proud owner of my niche blog, Debt Consolidation Book (www.debtconsolidationbook.com).

This is an experience that I will never forget and enjoyed very much. In fact, future business is being written because of the publicity from this competition. Annie, Christine and myself are providing our services towards duplicating our proven system and we are currently providing a customer with a new niche blog. We will be handing him the keys to the site in the next week or two.

Question #9

KRIS: Name your top five online money making resources…

GARRY: By far, Google AdSense is my #1 money maker. Runner up would have to be Yahoo Publisher. Third place is Clickbank. And then many programs such as Pepperjam Network, Commission Junction and Link Share.

Question #10

KRIS: If you were not a successful affiliate marketer and blogger what do you think you’d be doing with your life?

GARRY: That is very difficult for me to answer because I can’t see my life any other way. The only thing I can think of is that I would be selling airplanes just as most of my other family members do. However, I do that too anyway, so I guess that doesn’t count. During my whole time as an online business owner I have also worked in the eyecare industry as a certified and licensed optician. I know all too well that if I do indeed fail in the online world that I can easily get plugged back into the eyecare world.

  1. The Net Fool Says:

Garry is one of my favorite bloggers. Always right on the money, right on time… and he’s a family man! What’s not to like eh?

Great interview, it’s awesome that you are giving your affiliates a chance at some added publicity. Looking forward to more! :)

  2. Moneybites Says:

Solid interview. Garry is a great guy and I’m really glad that you got him on here Kris

  3. Mark Mason Says:

Garry — that for the shout-out, sir. That was one crazy contest alright. I was really impressed with the way you and the Cow handled all that, and I was proud to be a part.

One thing that does not come through well in this interview (because you are too modest) is how much you help the little guy. I cannot even count all the beginning bloggers that you have taken time to help (including me).

So, on behalf of all bloggers — thanks Garry.

Kris — your network ROCKS. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview of Garry. Great job.

  4. Paul Says:

Excellent interview. Can’t say enough good things about Garry. He is really a great guy and I am lucky to know him and learn from his experience.

  5. Mike Dammann Says:

great choice for an interviewee and excellent tips for anybody who wants to get deeper into affiliate marketing!

    ~ Mike Dammann

  6. Mike Huang Says:

Congratulations to Garry for this great interview. I think these are the most in depth details that I have read :)

I previously thought that Garry was an ass because of the way he talked to me (sorry Garry :P ), but he’s actually a VERY down to Earth guy. I guess he was only talking to me like that before because I pissed him off, but he forgave me for what I did.

I have been talking to Garry for about a few months now and I know that he owns a whole lot of websites that earn him quite an amount of money. He’s one of the few bloggers, or should I say affiliate marketers, that actually understand the concept of marketing and earning money.

I give props to him and thank you PepperJam for this Interview on him :)

    -Mike Huang

  7. Gerald Greene Says:

Kris, great idea to interview some of the more interesting good guys online.

Garry Conn is a real credit to the blogging world. Not only does he know his stuff but he is always willing to share what he knows. That is the key to Garry’s success. Novice and advanced bloggers can all learn something at http://garryconn.com That’s the main reason why they keep coming back. That and to see the new ideas that Garry showcases on his blog. -)

  8. Jarret Says:

    Great interview!!

Garry is really a great guy, very helpful and always willing to answer any question that you ask him. He really is dedicated to his readers and their satisfaction.

In fact, about a month ago he held a survey and asked his readers what they thought about his blog. After the survey was over, he posted the results and made the necessary changes that his readers wanted. Even though a few of them did not work out, I have never seen another blogger ask their readers what THEY wanted and then even implement the changes.

Just a few days ago, Garry contacted me on IM and asked me what I did not like about his blog. I gave him honest answers and gave him a few suggestions. Little did I know he also had contacted a few others through IM and asked them the same thing. A few days later, he had made a few minor changes to his blog. Talk about commitment and dedication to his readers!

He very highly values his readers just as he explained in the interview and you can definitely see that when talking to him.

He has some great posts on his blog and he really focuses on reviewing the product that he is offering. He doesn’t spam his blog and readers with “recommended” products, he only promotes products that he himself would use and does use. I read a few “make money online” blogs and I would have to say that Garry’s blog provides some great information with a good ratio of posts to product reviews.

Not only does he reveal some great tips and secrets on his blog, just read this interview! He gave out some great tips and advice on what to blog about and how to make money doing what you love.

I highly recommend you head on over to Garry’s blog and at least check it out. If you can’t find any value from it or don’t think that it would be worth subscribing to his feed or newsletter, you must be crazy!

  9. Jeff - buzzmyblog.com Says:

One of Garry’s best qualities is that no matter how successful he is, or how busy he may be, he always makes the time to be available to his readers. You can learn a lot from him, but he makes it feel like you are talking to your next door neighbor who you’ve known for years. Garry is just a down to earth, nice guy who knows a lot about the business he is in.

  10. Gaje Master Says:

Wow, Garry spilled the beans. I loved this post and enjoyed all the information that was given. I hope to learn as much as Garry someday but by then Garry will known twice as much so I have to do twice as much work to keep up.

  11. JohnCow Says:

Ya, it was fun kicking Garry’s butt :)

I am glad I got this opportunity to have some fun with Garry, he is a great guy and a fantastic blogger. Love a guy who puts his family first above his work!

Great to see some excellent coverage for a good guy with a great blog.

  12. Owen Says:

Great interview, Garry gives out great advice and helps people out all the time, if you don’t already read his blog then you should. I got some insights to more of the personal side of Garry from this interview and found out that he is in fact not a blogging machine.

  13. Normal Joe Says:

Garry is definitely one of the hardest working individuals I know…I don’t think the man sleeps.

Great interview, it’s always good to get a little more insight into the people we read from everyday. At least I know I do :)

  14. Bank Man -- Top CD Rates Blog Says:

Garry loves to help out the little guy. The competetion inspired me to start my own set of blogs.

Garry gives lots of great information and is always willing to help newbie’s realize their goals.

  15. Garry Conn Says:

Thank you everyone for such wonderful comments. I am thrilled that you enjoyed reading the interview. I hope you had as much fun reading it as I did participating in it. Special thanks to Kris Jones and the most wonderful Pepperjam Network team for working so hard at helping us Internet marketers in keep our bills paid by working so hard and close with some amazing advertisers.

    P.S. and no…. I do not sleep, and yes… I am a blogging machine, don’t second guess yourself. :)

  16. Big Blogger Says:

80% of what I know about Wordpress and MMO is thanks to Garry and to David Cooley.

Garry is a great & nice guy and, as Mark Mason pointed out, he is totally devoted to help upstart the Normal Joe whith a dayjob who wants to make money online with a blog.

Garry stands behind his opinions and fights for a scam free MMO niche, because he always keep in mind the end user: YOU ! He wants that you get the best information and that you don’t get ripped off.

He is also a good teacher: if you ask him for help he gives you the answers, but if you are too lazy to learn it and do it by your own, after a couple of times, he kicks you in your butt to make you act :)

I’ve noticed 2 major strenghts of Garry:
    1. he types faster than every person I know and he is able to provide good content at the speed of light
    2. he is a very creative person, take a look at his blog: he makes some changes at the layout or at the graphics at least every 2 weeks (in some periods, like in this days, even daily). In the past he has given away a very effective Wordpress theme.

Garry, you should really also dive deep into the selling of SEO- and ADS- optimized Wordpress themes.

    ciao
    alexander

  17. betshopboy Says:

What a long and solid interview!

Garry is an amazing guy, always willing to lend a helping hand to little guy like me.

    Way to go Garry!

  18. Brennan Kingsland Says:

Garry is a great guy and an inspiration! I’ve learned so much from him that I will use again and again in my internet marketing career. And he was compassionate and concerned with my recent near-fatal illness, and reached out to help me.

It was through Garry that I had the privilege to meet David Cooley (formerly CyberCoder) who has been my mentor in learning how these ‘blankety-blank’ websites work behind the scenes.

Gee, Garry, you have airplanes AND eyesight as backups! What a man!

Garry, you are a true gem!

    Your friend,
    Brennan

  19. Kris Jones Says:

As I was reading Garry’s responses to my interview prior to posting it I really felt that Garry was a special guy – very down to Earth, smart, and super likeable.

Congrats on all your success Garry – the wind is at your back!

  20. Gavin Mountford Says:

Great Interview! It’s great to get to know more about Garry Conn. I read his blog on a regular basis when I get the time and enjoy his writing style.

Thanks to both of you for providing this excellent Interview.

    Gavin

  21. Annie Binns Says:

Kris, good call on interviewing Garry – this guy is SO the real deal. At least once a week I slap myself on the forehead while reading his blog and wonder why the heck no one else thinks of these things except Garry. (Plus, of course, he turned me on to Pepperjam which I love because I have a generalized blog and I can pick the advertisers I want).

And I finally know why Garry’s glasses so nicely fit the shape of his face and look like they’ve been adjusted with perfection. :-) Mystery solved.

  22. Garry Conn Says:

You would NOT believe how difficult it is for me to keep my eyeglasses in perfect adjustment with having three kids. That is funny that you mentioned my eyeglasses. I am extremely particular about how my eyeglasses fit on my face. I am not really very particular about things, but something about my eyeglasses really gets me crazy.

Cleaning them is the worst. I am always busy, but if there is something like a piece of dust or a smudge on the lenses I have to stop everything I am doing to clean them. If I try to ignore it, it is a total distraction and I can’t get any work done. LOL!!!!

  23. Forest Says:

Great interview and i am very proud to be mentioned :)

I backed Garry in the comp and still to this day do not see him as a loser. I still feel Garry’s site made more profit, however the new Cow proved his worth as a very highly professional blogger…. then we found out who he really was :)

Well done to both of them. The Cowpetition was a success, me thinks.

  24. Murray Says:

I agree with everything that has already been said about Garry Conn. I have not known Garry for very long, however I feel like I have known him for years. Garry takes the time to get to know his readers and this is one of the reasons his reader base is growing everyday.
Garry is always willing to share his knowledge and explains everything in a manner that can be easily understood.

I am the customer that Garry is currently building a blog for and I can tell you that the manner in which Garry has gone about this project has been nothing but totally professional (as you would expect). He leaves no stone unturned and he has also surrounded himself with very professional people to assist. Why wouldn’t you want to work on a project with Garry? – He is the BEST.

Thank you very much for the interview Kris and highlighting the life of one of the truly great guys and bloggers of the internet.

Congratulations Garry and I wish you continued success mate.

    Regards,
    Murray

  25. Zath Says:

I’ve known Garry for well over a year now, but it’s still great to keep learning more about him and I certainly did in this detailed interview!

Thanks and congrats to Garry on coverage that he deserves to be getting!

  26. shane at make money blogging Says:

WOW Im late to the party as always. I literally stumbled across across garry’s blog a few months back. And started trolling his archives. His blog should be read backwards if you have ANY INTENTION of making money in this blogging game. Since reading his blog and putting to use what he writes my adsense earnings have sky rocketed. !!!
But more than that Garry is a great person and actually answers his email. Over that time we’ve done things for each other, trade bits and pieces of information, you know how to do this and how to do that, did you know if you did this then that will happen.
Its been a great learning experiences and a pleasure having garry in my corner of the blog-o-sphere

I’m fairly new to the Blogger world and slowly
getting a few return readers who I interact with.

I visit some of the top bloggers like Problogger
to get tips and advise on how to present a Blog.

I put Garry Conn in that classification and read
his articles on a regular basis to learn the ropes
on how to earn an income via blogging.
Way to go Garry! You earned the spotlight.

What a great interview! It’s another example of just how hard Garry works and why so many people read and act on his advice.

Affiliate marketing programs benefit both the affiliate and the business owner because the pay for performance methods in the agreement make this possible. Both the business owner and the affiliate benefit from this arrangement. The merchant gains wider exposure and a wider market to advertise his or her products without costing him anything extra, and the products or services get much more exposure than they otherwise would have without the countless affiliate marketers promoting a product or service for him or her.

    Great interview.

Garry (as others well know) is one of the most giving bloggers out there in terms of helping others succeed. He actually wants them to succeed which is rare.
