ASW: Managing Your Affiliate Manager

Hey everyone!  I’m Maura Godwin, Assistant Director of Affiliate Marketing at pepperjam.  I’m here at Affiliate Summit West, blogging for the first time ever on the pepperjam blog.  Today I attended “Managing Your Affiliate Manager” with Dan Murray, Internet Marketing Strategist of Ravenwood Marketing and Steve Schaffer, CEO of Vertive Inc.  It is always helpful to hear what affiliates are looking for in affiliate managers, so I was excited for this session, as I like to make sure that pepperjam is doing everything possible to keep affiliates satisfied. 

The theme of the session was  about keeping open lines of communication between the affiliate and the affiliate manager.  Most of the points that Dan and Steve touched on were expected.  However, for any newbie affiliate marketing managers out there, this session would have been useful to you.  You want to make sure that your affiliates, especially your top performers, are satisfied because they are going to drive your affiliate sales.  So, what is it that makes well-rounded affiliate managers?  Here’s a recap on what Dan and Steve had to say about managing your affiliate manager:

First and foremost, have a conversation with the affiliate about your goals and expectations for the program.  If you expect the affiliate to drive a certain volume of sales before they can receive a commission increase, communicate this information to the affiliate.  A partnership is not going to be successful if you do not share information.  For instance, talk about the commission rate, conversion rate and program terms so the affiliate can evaluate what kind of return on investment they can receive by promoting your affiliate program.   As the affiliate manager, you should know your program inside and out.  You should be able to explain your PPC policy, identify seasonality and recognize what methods your top affiliates are utilizing to drive sales.  The affiliates who find this information to be valuable are going to miss out on an opportunity if the affiliate manager cannot provide this info.  In turn, the affiliate manager is going to lose out as well because the chance to form a partnership has passed and potential sales are lost. 

It is also imperative that the affiliate manager understand that big-time affiliates aka super affiliates spend a lot of time and effort when putting together a PPC campaign or niche website for a merchant.  Don’t pull the rug out from under their feet by failing to tell the affiliates that the program had tracking issues for the last three weeks.  Those affiliates just spent several weeks or months building up their PPC campaign to make the merchant money!

To sum it up, communication is key.  Talk to your affiliates and take the time to explain what is going on in your affiliate program.  Send them promotions, make sure your PPC policy is clear and tell them what your conversion rate is.  Affiliates are looking for merchants that can provide them with stable, long-term relationships.  Without this information, how will they be able to help grow your affiliate program? 

Affiliate Summit West – Video Innovation In Affiliate Marketing

Greetings from Las Vegas! My name is Mandy Foley and I recently transitioned my role at Pepperjam from Senior Affiliate Manager to Affiliate Relations Specialist on the Pepperjam Network. Being that this is my first time attending Affiliate Summit, as well as my first trip to Las Vegas, I was very eager to get started and work my way around the conference as well as the city! Today I attended “Video Innovation in Affiliate Marketing”, moderated by Melissa Salas, Director of Marketing, Buy.com. The panel consisted of Tim Carter, Founder, AskTheBuilder.com, Joel Comm, President, InfoMedia as well as creator of Next Internet Millionaire (which featured our very own affiliate marketing guru, Kris Jones), Brian McCarthy, SVP Business Development, Revver, Steve Rosenbaum, CEO, Magnify.net, and Gary Vaynerchuk, Host, Wine Library TV. The dynamic of the group was amazing, which really engaged the audience. I chose this topic in hopes to gain a better understanding as to what makes video content a successful marketing tool, and it was a job well done!

These five individuals, as well as many others, have found success in captivating audiences by placing videos, and tutorials on their websites You may be asking why video, as opposed to content? Websites containing videos convey clear messages, as well as creative, memorable messages to viewers, and in today’s society, people tend to take more of an interest in watching something, as opposed to reading it. Videos allow you to interact with the audience on a different level, and have more of a personal relationship with each viewer. Each of the speakers encouraged affiliates, as well as advertisers interested in creating a video to speak about something you know and love. For example, Brian spoke about his love for wine, and his family’s wine business. He took over the business and turned the company into a major online retailer, and is the Host of Wine Library TV, generating a huge following.

I think the overall concept of video innovation in online commerce is taking off, and according to the majority of the panel, websites without videos will eventually no longer exist. This powerful marketing tool allows affiliates to gain a better understanding of the content given, and has opened a huge window of opportunity for affiliates to maximize their earning potential.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Affiliate Summit West….Affiliate PPC Seminar

Hello to all….it’s Tara DeGiusto , Coordinator of Advertiser Relations for Pepperjam Network.  This is my first time writing a blog, so please bear with me.  Affiliate Summit West has been great so far.  I had the opportunity to meet up with many clients that I have been working with, along with affiliates that I have known for quite some time.   It is great seeing everyone and I am looking forward to the rest of Summit!

I decided to attend Affiliate PPC:  Brand Enhancement or Bid Escalation featuring speakers David Lewis, 77 Blue, and Kevin Lee, Didit.com.  This is a topic that I have discussed with clients I have worked with at pepperjam many times in the past and was very interesting to hear others’ opinions.  It was a great seminar guys and I was happy I got to listen in.  Kevin was leaning toward Bid Escalation, where as David was backing Brand Enhancement.  When it comes to trademarks and branding, advertisers are very touchy on allowing affiliates to use theirs in any search campaign.  Advertisers feel they should be the only ones to bid on their own trademark.  This would then allow the available real estate open to competitors.  This subject has been a debate for many years now and will definitely continue for many more.  The real question to ask when considering Terms and Conditions for Search Policies in any affiliate program is:  If you do decide to allow affiliates to do this, how do you decide who?

David feels advertisers should definitely use their affiliates as partners and find the right ones that will work with you.  Kevin agrees with this statement and feels if you decide to allow it, look at the affiliate sites and decide if they would be a great partner for you..are they doing things that shouldn’t be done?  Get these affiliates on the phone and discuss and see if they are willing to discuss options.  If you have an affiliate program, it is your job to police your trademark, but where should you stop?  Then, how upset would your affiliates be with your program if you do tell them to stop…would they drop you completely?    In closing statements, if you don’t allow this, you will only have 1 offer on the page, the one you post, and this leaves plenty of room for competitors to eat up the rest!  Advertisers need to take control of their brands and do what it takes to make the most money and maximize real estate!  This is definitely an interesting topic that advertisers need to take into further consideration to maximize the potential for their affiliate program.
